It’s time to review the past year and think of a resolution!

November 30, 2015 - By Karine Larose, M.Sc.

Temps de lecture 2 minutes

If you’re like me, you’ve suddenly realised that the end of the year is hurtling toward us at an alarming speed. Christmas is just around the corner while it seems like just yesterday that my kids went back to school. The truth is that a new year will be upon us before we know it and it will be time once more to make resolutions. Yes, already!

Before getting started on a list of things to change, it’s important to take stock of what you’ve accomplished during the past year. This will help you better define your goals so that they are more realistic. Are you happy with your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual growth over the last year? Here are three simple steps you can follow to help you keep your resolutions in 2016.

Step 1: Identify what worked and what didn’t

Before making new resolutions, take a little time to identify the goals you reached this year and those you did not. To be more specific, did you reach your health and fitness goals? Did you achieve your goal weight? Did you work out regularly? Did you lose your motivation?

Step 2: Understand why

There are two elements to be considered. Firstly, what made your goals easier to reach? Then, what hurdles did you face that made your goals harder to achieve? For example, if you planned on exercising 3 to 4 times a week, why did you fail? Lack of time? Fatigue? Too busy? Be specific so you can find a clear way to overcome these obstacles.

Step 3: Find solutions

No one is in a better position than you are to identify the circumstances that give you a hard time. This means you should take the necessary measures right away to stop you from falling into the same trap next year.

So, you must make sure you set New Year resolutions that are both specific and realistic, while being stimulating! I will get back to you shortly (via the I’m taking charge blog) with concrete tips for making resolutions you’ll be able to keep!
