Is oat milk healthy?

Oat milk is rapidly gaining popularity and can now be found in most grocery stores. Here’s all you need to know about this new product.

What is oat milk?

Oat milk is simply made by blending oatmeal and water together. The liquid is then strained in cheesecloth to separate the milk from the oatmeal.

It’s a great option for vegetarians, vegans or anyone who wants to eat a more plant based diet. It is also a great product for individuals who are intolerant to, nuts, soy, or lactose.

Oat milk is naturally gluten free but it can be contaminated in the production factory. If you are avoiding gluten, make sure the product is certified as gluten free before buying it.

What are the health benefits of oat milk?

Compared to other milks, oat milk generally has more calories, carbs and fiber.

It provides approximately 3-4 grams of protein per cup (250ml). This is much more than other cow milk substitutes such as coconut, and rice milk which don’t provide any protein. However, oat milk contains about half the protein of soymilk and cow milk.

Like many other plant-based milks, it is usually fortified with vitamins A, D, B2 and B12 and, of course, calcium. Some people make their own oat milk at home, however it can be less nutritious because it is not fortified with these vitamin and minerals.

Which milk is the healthiest?

In my opinion, we can’t label one type of milk as THE BEST MILK. All milks have their pros and cons. Varying your milk, based on your nutritional needs and taste preferences, is the healthiest method.

Depending on the brand and flavour of the milk, the nutritional value can quickly change. Make sure to take the time to compare the ingredient list when buying milk. Pay particular attention to the added sugar. When possible, always choose the unsweetened version.
