Homemade Chocolate Hummus

This chocolate hummus can be enjoyed as a snack or a dessert. Unique, balanced, and rich in fiber, it helps promote satiety. It pairs perfectly with pieces of fruit such as apple, strawberry, or clementine, or for a more indulgent version, why not add a few marshmallows or small cookies? Easy to prepare and carry, it fits perfectly into lunchboxes!

Ingredients

  • 20 whole pitted dates (100 g)
  • ½ cup (125 ml) hot water
  • 1 can chickpeas (540 ml), drained and rinsed
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) neutral vegetable oil (such as canola oil)
  • A pinch of salt

Preparation

  1. In a heat-resistant container, add half a cup of hot water and the dates. Let them soften in the water for 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, add the chickpeas, cocoa powder, vegetable oil, and salt to a medium bowl with high sides (to prevent splattering when using an immersion blender). You may also use a food processor.
  3. Once the dates have softened, add both the dates and the soaking water to the bowl with the other ingredients.
  4. Blend the mixture using an immersion blender until smooth (about 3 minutes). Depending on the power of the appliance, you may need to pause to prevent the immersion blender from overheating.
  5. Blend again and check that the mixture is completely smooth. If there are still chunks, continue blending until smooth.
  6. Adjust the flavor to your taste by adding cocoa powder, salt, maple syrup, or sugar. You can also make your chocolate hummus thinner by adding a little water.
