How to Cut Your Grocery Bill

January 18, 2016 - By Nautilus Plus

Buying food at supermarkets and grocery stores is an essential expenditure that represents a large part of our budget, even more so when we decide to adopt healthy eating habits; the bill may sometimes increase quite a bit, and that’s why we should plan ahead on a weekly basis to avoid steep bills and wasting food.

Here are 10 easy tips to help you save on food:

1) Avoid processed products. The cost per serving of homemade products is lower than that of commercial products.
2) Avoid “empty calories,” as they don’t provide any essential nutrients and will leave you hungry for more (rice cakes, low-calorie granola bars and yogurts, etc.).
3) Make a grocery list and stick to it.
4) Never shop for groceries on an empty stomach, as you may be tempted to buy much more food than you need.
5) Look for special offers in flyers. You don’t have to cut out all the coupons and go to 10 different stores to take advantage of these offers; use them as tools, and pick the grocery that has the highest number of weekly offers that correspond to the items on your list.
6) Learn to improvise and use leftovers to create new dishes.
7) Beware of marketing. Special offers are not always as good as they seem to be.
8) Bend over; the most expensive items are always stored at eye level!
9) Choose private label products; as a general rule, they are less expensive than most popular brands.
10) Try plant protein. Read the article Top 5 Best Budget-Friendly Protein Sources!

In addition, shopping during the least busy hours of the day will enable you to walk through the aisles way faster and thus reduce possible temptations. You should also remember to bring your reusable bags, as they are better for both the environment and your wallet!

Keep in mind that the most important departments, including the fruit and vegetable stands, as well as meat, fish, and dairy products, are located away from the centre.

Enjoy your savings!
