Cottage Cheese: protein-packed superfood or just a passing trend?

September 3, 2025 - By Audrey Perron

Temps de lecture 3 minutes

Lately, cottage cheese has been gaining popularity in healthy recipes. It’s showing up everywhere: in smoothies, on toast, in sauces … even in high-protein frozen desserts! But what explains this sudden craze for cottage cheese? Is it just a passing fad? Here’s my perspective as a nutritionist.

The Rise in Popularity of Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese stands out for several positive reasons: it’s high in protein, minimally processed, easy to find at the grocery store, and simple to incorporate into a wide range of recipes. Many people are rediscovering it not only for its strong nutritional profile but also for its versatility.

It works just as well in sweet as in savory dishes. This food can even replace cream, yogurt, or ricotta cheese, with the added bonus of extra protein—perfect for anyone looking to boost their protein intake.

A True Protein Champion

Yes, that’s one of its main advantages! A 125 g serving (about ½ cup) contains on average 12 to 15 g of protein, depending on the brand and fat content. That’s comparable to, or even higher than, some Greek yogurts.

It’s a great option to support satiety, aid recovery after a workout, or simply help balance a meal.

Cottage: Small Container, Big Benefits

Cottage cheese comes with several advantages:

  • High in complete protein: ideal for muscle recovery and weight management since it’s a lean protein
  • Source of calcium: supports bone health
  • Low in fat: a helpful ally for a balanced diet

A Few Limitations to Keep in Mind…

Like any food, it isn’t perfect for everyone:

  • Sodium content: some versions are quite salty. However, reduced-sodium options are available in grocery stores—look for 350 mg or less on the nutrition label.
  • Lactose: cottage cheese may be poorly tolerated by those who are lactose intolerant.
  • Taste and texture: not everyone is a fan … but when prepared well, it can be surprisingly good!

What to Do with Leftover Cottage Cheese?

Got a half-empty container sitting in the fridge? Here are some practical ideas to use it up:

Quick snacks:

  • On crackers with a little pepper or a drizzle of honey.
  • Mixed with chopped fruit and a sprinkle of granola.
  • In a smoothie: yes, it blends really well! You’ll get an ultra-creamy texture.

Simple meals:

  • As a substitute for ricotta in lasagna or stuffed pasta.
  • Mixed with tuna or salmon for a protein-packed salad.
  • Stirred into scrambled eggs for a creamier texture and a protein boost.

Tip: If the grainy texture bothers you, a quick spin in the blender will turn it into a smooth cream!

Different Ways to Incorporate It into Your Daily Routine

  • Sweet: with fresh fruit, maple syrup, granola…
  • Savory: on a slice of bread with avocado and a poached egg
  • Blended: in sauces, dips, or dressings
  • Cooked: in protein muffins, quiches, or pancakes

The Nutritionist’s Verdict

Yes, cottage cheese is an interesting option, especially if you’re looking to increase your protein intake in a simple and affordable way. It’s not a miracle food, but it can certainly be part of a balanced, varied, and tasty diet.

So next time you come across a container of cottage cheese at the grocery store, give it a try!
