Healthy Summer Cocktails

July 11, 2012 - By Nautilus Plus

Temps de lecture 2 minutes

It’s finally summer time; the weather is nice and hot, and you are regularly tempted by an irresistible urge to relax on a terrace or near the pool. Nice weather makes us thirsty, so we have to be conscious of the nutritional value of the different drinks we choose to make informed choices.

First of all, know that the different “ready-to-drink” cocktail options offered on the market are often loaded with sugar to enhance taste (such as the famous Bacardi Breezer, Smirnoff Ice, Palm Bay, etc.). Ideally, you should prepare them yourself at home, carefully choosing the ingredients. If you add sugar or syrup (such as the famous grenadine), do it sparingly.

Here are some interesting options:

Spritzer
In a large glass filled with ice, mix half-and-half of soda (or carbonated water) with a dry white wine.

Virgin Ceasar
Just like the classic Bloody Ceasar, but without the vodka! (Note to those with high blood pressure: this option contains a lot of salt).

Homemade Sangria
In a cup, put some ice cubes and citrus slices, and add the following in equal proportions: red wine, orange juice, and carbonated water.

Homemade Orangina
In a cup, put some ice cubes and citrus slices. Fill with carbonated water, and add a touch (about 3 tablespoons) of orange or grapefruit juice.

Do not forget that alcohol and heat do not mix well; both contribute to dehydration. Keep a water pitcher nearby. Water sounds boring? Add slices of lemon, lime, orange, or grapefruit! For a refreshing touch, add mint and lime zest. Also, adding frozen berries (such as blueberries or raspberries) will create a festive atmosphere and act as ice cubes.

If you do not have the luxury of preparing your cocktail yourself, do not panic, there are lighter options like the new “Skinnygirl” margarita (110 calories per glass, about the equivalent of a glass of wine), the Molson 67 beer (67 calories per bottle), and the alcohol-free Becks beer.

Cheers!
