Reduce your cancer risk by 70%. Richard Béliveau fuels front page article

August 30, 2013 - By Karine Larose, M.Sc.

Temps de lecture 4 minutes

70%: hardly negligible! You can indeed prevent the development of various cancers by 20% to 50% simply by amending the composition of your meals. If you also refrain from smoking, protect yourself from the sun, and engage in at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, your risk of developing cancer drops even further, by 70% in fact. The same applies to diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s prevention.

On July 18 last, an article entitled “LES 30 ALIMENTS conseillés par la science” (30 FOODS recommended by science) made the headlines of Le Point, a highly acclaimed French news magazine. The reporters consulted Dr. Richard Béliveau, the researcher who coined the “nutriprevention” concept and authored more than 250 publications in international medical reviews. The interview sought to reveal the latest information concerning the impact of food on health. Here is a short overview of the facts that should be retained from this report.

A prospective study conducted over 8 years on 400,000 Europeans has just confirmed the soundness of the 10 rules issued in 2007 by the Fonds mondial de recherche contre le cancer, a member of the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). Six of the rules concern food! But eating all sorts of foods is not enough! Of special note among those foods having a significant impact on health are: green vegetables, berries, cruciferous vegetables, green tea, turmeric, citrus fruits, garlic, and onion. By integrating these foods into our menus, cancer can be prevented effectively and without side effects.

Our body produces one million precancerous cells a day!

As unsettling as this may seem, it’s true. 30% of women over 40 have micro tumors at breast level, 40% of men have micro tumors at prostate level, and 98% of the population has tumors at thyroid level. By eating plants with anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, and anticholesteremic properties, we prevent these tumors from becoming cancerous.

In this article, Béliveau reminds the reader that the second risk factor for cancer, after cigarette smoking, is obesity. He discourages fat, sugar, and salt intake, three unhealthy ingredients used by the food-processing industry. Being potentially addictive, we tend to eat more than we require, which is harmful to the body. This means we must reduce our intake of processed foods. Among the other rules for promoting an iron constitution: refrain from smoking, stay slim, eat 7 to 10 portions of fruits and vegetables daily in addition to legumes (beans) and whole grain cereals, and engage in 30 minutes of exercise each day.

Béliveau finishes the interview by explaining why people take so long to apply these principles: “When you practice prevention, you ask people to make choices now for a benefit in the long term and to call their lifestyle into question. The message is a positive one though: our food can become a weapon that will allow is to live longer and in better health!”

30 minutes of exercise to further cancer research

Nautilus Plus is proud to have created the Richard Béliveau fund to encourage research efforts that will advance knowledge pertaining to foods that protect us, foods that harm us, and how these foods influence our bill of health. The 6th edition of the 30-minute workout to help out the fund will take place on November 10 next at all Nautilus Plus locations. By making a $25 donation, you’ll receive the official event t-shirt, engage in 30 minutes of intense cardiovascular training to burn as many calories as you can, and by doing so make it possible to further research in the field of nutriprevention by local researchers. Visit a Nautilus Plus center for all the details pertaining to this event.
